How Should a Crossbody Bag Fit?

Crossbody bag adjusted to sit at the hip

A crossbody fits right when the strap crosses your torso, the bag rests against your body, and the weight feels even — not swinging or digging in. Here is how to set it.

1. Strap length

Most of our crossbodies have an adjustable strap. For a hip carry, set the drop to about 50–60 cm so the bag lands at your hip with the strap running to the opposite shoulder. Too short and it rides under your arm; too long and it bangs your knee.

2. Bag position

Walking: let it rest at the hip, against your side. In a crowd or on transit: pull it up across the front of your ribs where you can see and feel it. Either way it should touch your body, not stick out where a door or a hand can catch it.

3. Comfort

The load should sit on your shoulder and opposite hip. If the strap digs in, the bag is too heavy for the width — move bulky items to a tote or lighten the crossbody. A 400–600 g leather crossbody worn correctly disappears after a few minutes.

4. Body proportion

5. Daily use check

Adjust once, then live in it: can you reach your phone without removing the bag? Does it stay put when you bend? If yes, the fit is right. The colorblock crossbody and kelly crossbody both have adjustable straps for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should a crossbody bag sit on the body?
At the hip for walking, or pulled up to the front ribcage in a crowd. The bag should rest against your body, not swing out from the hip where it can catch a door or be reached from behind.
How long should the crossbody strap be?
Long enough that the bag sits at your hip with the strap crossing to the opposite shoulder. Most of our crossbodies have an adjustable strap — set the drop to about 50–60 cm for a hip carry.
Does crossbody bag size depend on body height?
A little. A taller person can wear a 23 cm bag at the hip comfortably; on a shorter torso the same bag reads larger, so wear it higher. Keep the load light so the strap stays comfortable either way.
